With the severe weather over the last few days our first thought is that we're grateful that, as far as we know, our family, friends and clients avoided any personal injuries or damage to property. While there are still high winds today, we want to publish some basic advice in the form of steps to take 'after the storm'...

Assuming there are no life or structural threatening issues:

• Do a visual inspection of your home or business, inside & out WHETHER YOU THINK THAT YOU HAVE DAMAGE OR NOT! Check your siding and roof from the ground, looking for anything missing or loose; shingles, vents, downspouts, etc. Look for sand-like roofing gravel around your downspouts. Visually inspect the exterior electrical wires. Visually inspect for trees that may be leaning and branches that may be broken and/or rubbing against the house. Go to the attic and check for water stains and leaks. Look at your ceilings for staining. Check your basement for leaks and dampness. Check all other structures and fences for damage. Photos and video are recommended.
• If you believe that you may have damage to your home or business, call a reputable local roofer or restoration company.

• Do not allow work to be done without requesting and receiving a certificate of insurance from the contractor offering service. Again, speak with your agent to get advice.
• Do a physical inspection of your vehicles looking for signs of hail damage or from windblown objects.

Emergencies can vary, from auto accidents to house fires, from burglaries to storm damage. The first priority is to ensure everyone's safety. Call 911 if ambulance, firefighters, or police are required. Next, do what you can to prevent any further loss.
