Insurance isn't necessarily something most of us think about every day—until something goes wrong. That's when the questions start.
At Mountain Lakes Insurance, we work with business owners across North Georgia every day, and many of the same questions come up again and again.
In Part 1, we covered home and auto insurance questions. Here in Part 2, we're focusing on business insurance and what you need to know to protect your business—completing our list of the 20 most common insurance questions we hear.
1. Is business insurance required by law?
Some types are. For example, most businesses with employees need workers' compensation, and vehicles used for work require commercial auto insurance. Other coverage may be required by leases or contracts.
2. What is a Business Owner's Policy (BOP)?
A BOP bundles two important coverages—general liability and property insurance—into one convenient policy that is often cheaper. It's a good option for many small businesses.
3. How much business insurance do I need?
That depends on things like your industry, revenue, number of employees, and potential risks. Every business is a little different.
4. Does general liability cover professional mistakes?
No. If your work involves giving advice or providing professional services, you'll likely need professional liability insurance, also called Errors & Omissions (E&O) coverage.
5. Are my tools and equipment covered?
Not always. Businesses that move tools between job sites often need specialized coverage like inland marine insurance or specific equipment coverage.
6. Does my business really need cyber insurance?
In many cases, yes. If you store customer data, process payments, or rely heavily on email or online systems, this type of coverage has become increasingly important because cyber threats affect companies of all sizes.
7. Does my homeowners policy cover a home-based business?
Usually not. Most homeowners' policies exclude business activity, so you may need separate coverage if you run a business from home.
8. How often should I review my insurance policies?
At least once a year. You should also review them anytime something major changes—like moving, renovating, buying a vehicle, hiring employees, or growing your business.
The biggest insurance mistakes happen when people assume they're covered — without verifying the details. Asking questions and reviewing your coverage regularly can prevent expensive surprises.
